Yesterday, I wrote about the barrage of annoying political TV ads running up to the mid-term elections.  Today I present my "rules" for political TV ads if I had control of this idiocy.

1) Cut down the campaign time to 2 months.  If you can't make your case in that amount of time, you shouldn't be allowed to run.

2) No more 3rd party ads (Sr.'s for Cand. A, Hippies for Cand. B, etc.)  most of these groups are smoke screens and they are not legally liable for claims made in their ads. Additionally, they are not required to disclose who funds their groups.  Get them out of the system.

3) Each candidate is allowed 10 televised ads per week.  This would allow possible candidate's with less money and better ideas to actually get their message out.  Let's level the playing field a little.

4) No candidate is allowed to mention or show the opposition in any ads.  Use this time to tell the voters who you are, what you believe and what you want to do if you are elected.

Four pretty simple rules that would make the system a bit more fair and tolerable to all.

Just a side note, not that it has to do with TV ads, but let's get rid of roadside signs for political candidates.  They are an eye sore and if you are hoping to win based in large part on name recognition, I don't want you in office.

Everyone have a great weekend!

  1. Can you send these in to someone?? I especially like the idea of limiting the advertising. Lack of funds is definitely a limiting factor. Thanks, Mike--always enjoy your opinion!
